People with HIV can have healthy children. Vaginal delivery of the baby is also possible. For this, the mother needs to be on effective HIV treatment. HIV medication protects the child during pregnancy and birth. It is important for you to seek in-depth medical counselling and support.
If the mother is not receiving treatment for HIV, the child can catch the virus during pregnancy, birth or breastfeeding.
Your local ‘Aidshilfe’ support centre will be happy to provide counselling and can support you before and after the birth of your child.
